KSI Global Gaming Network: A Proven System for Protecting Our Youth
The gaming industry has long been a scapegoat for politicians and the media, often blamed for issues involving youth, from violent video games being linked to school shootings to other catastrophic events. Recently, attention has shifted to platforms like Discord, Twitch, Kick, and even Roblox, with claims that these are spaces where children are being groomed by adults.
I agree that it would be unacceptable in an era where kids play outside for an adult to approach and engage with my 13-year-old. However, we no longer live in a world where parents can track their children by spotting their bicycles in a neighbor’s yard. Many parents have relinquished that vigilance, relying instead on online gaming as a virtual babysitter.
Twenty-seven years ago, KSI Global Gaming Network foresaw that online gaming would become the new playground for children. Since then, KSI has worked diligently to design a community that provides a safe haven for its members, particularly our youth.
KSI is more than just kids playing games with adults; it incorporates robust safeguards to achieve its mission. New members must agree to a Code of Conduct and undergo a thorough onboarding process to ensure the safety of existing members while integrating newcomers into the community.
KSI employs a ranking structure that allows members to advance, learning essential leadership skills as they progress. Starting as Privates, members can rise to roles like Captain, eventually taking on administrative positions. This system, loosely modeled after police or military hierarchies, ensures that as members grow in responsibility, they learn to manage larger groups, such as squads or divisions.
This structure prevents the community from growing too large, ensuring leadership remains familiar with its members and fosters lifelong friendships. KSI also offers educational activities, including graphic arts, media streaming, casting, and competitive gaming, with awards for participation. Members are recognized for their years of service and leadership achievements.
This structured environment allows members to develop as leaders in a safe online space. When mistakes are made, mentors guide members to learn and grow, providing a supportive framework for personal development.
KSI was founded on principles of risk assessment and management, with contingency plans for every scenario, using a risk matrix similar to those employed by high schools and colleges. By design, KSI operates as a policing system with its own cyber courts to document and address violations of rules or laws. These courts ensure fair and impartial judgments, reporting to appropriate authorities when necessary and determining appropriate consequences for members.
In conclusion, community systems like KSI, refined through 27 years of trial and error, should serve as a model for the gaming industry. With full funding, KSI’s framework could provide a safe, inclusive online playground for youth, alleviating parental concerns and ensuring a secure environment for all.
