Sony Records $765 Million Impairment Loss on Bungie Acquisition
Sony Interactive Entertainment has taken a $765 million impairment charge against its Bungie assets in its fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, due to underperformance at the studio.
The full-year impairment breaks down as follows:
$204 million recognized in the second quarter (November 2025).
Approximately $561 million recognized in the fourth quarter.
This non-cash write-down reduces the book value of Bungie’s intangible assets and goodwill on Sony’s balance sheet.
Sony originally acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022.
The charge was driven primarily by Destiny 2 delivering lower-than-expected sales and player engagement amid a competitive market.
Additional pressure came from challenges with Bungie’s newer title Marathon, an extraction shooter that has faced launch and performance issues.
The impairment contributed to weaker results in Sony’s Game & Network Services segment for the year.
However, Sony has stated it does not anticipate further large impairments of this scale in the coming fiscal year and remains committed to supporting Marathon and growing its player base.
This marks a notable setback for Sony’s major studio acquisition strategy, highlighting the challenges of integrating and scaling live-service game operations in a tough industry environment.
