Diablo 5 / Diablo 4 expansion details from BlizzCon coverage. Here’s the fuller picture from BlizzCon 2026 and follow-up interviews this week.
The pitch
Diablo V (official branding is Diablo V) is in full production for Spring 2029. Platforms not announced. Blizzard’s line: “Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won.”
It’s set ~100 years after Diablo 4, and seven years after Diablo actually took Sanctuary. He rules from the throne of Westmarch, using people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict as a step toward Heaven.
You play the Heir of Westmarch, on the run through a burned-out kingdom — not a hero stopping the apocalypse, but a survivor in one that’s already happened.
Joe Shely / Tiffany Wat framed the theme as: what do you become when the world has already fallen?
How the world works
This is a deliberate swing away from Diablo 4’s fixed open world.
- No towns. Strongholds and safe hubs are gone.
- You travel with a caravan of survivors who act as vendors, quest givers, and companions. Confirmed examples: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye, and a stranded Treasure Goblin looking for meaning “in a world where greed has lost its meaning.”
- Procedural overworld and dungeons — layouts, monsters, and points of interest change when you return (closer to D2/D3 than D4’s handcrafted map).
- Diablo is a present character, not just the final boss — he shapes the world from the start (same idea as Mephisto in D4, turned up).
Classes and loot
Three classes shown so far:
- Demon Hunter — twin crossbows, leap/pin, D3 nostalgia with a new kit
- Monk — fists + holy light
- Plague Knight (new) — heavy armor, “walking death”: spread disease, then consume it for power
Shely said D5 will launch with more classes than any Diablo has ever had total — reporters are reading that as 9–10 at ship, not drip-fed later.
More reveals starting 2027.
Loot is swinging back toward Diablo II:
- Stat requirements on gear
- Bigger items eat more inventory space
- Runes / runewords
- Gear sets
- Crafting inspired by Lord of Hatred
Early inventory concepts were shown at the panel.
Multiplayer
Shely: you can play solo or with friends, and “all of the content” should be doable together.
They will not say yet if D4’s shared-world MMO-lite stuff (bumping into strangers, world bosses, Helltides-style events) returns.
Procedural maps + no towns make that harder. Details closer to 2029.
Regular design updates start 2027.
What this means for Diablo 4
Director Brent Gibson: no more D4 expansions.
Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred closed the “Story of Hatred.”
The team is on seasons + Diablo 5.
They still claim “bright support” and “a very long time.”
Still coming in D4:
- Season of Hell’s Legacy starts tomorrow, Sept 15 — 30th anniversary season, Deckard Cain, all three Prime Evils
- Diablo 4 on Switch 2 the same day, with all existing content
- Amazon class pack in H1 2027 (Champion / Skirmisher / Ranger / Commander archetypes), paid class DLC, not a full expansion
Seasons can still move story in the 100-year gap before D5; Gibson said they don’t have the whole path locked because they want to react to how seasons land.
D2R getting a Warlock class is their example that older titles can keep getting drops.
Also announced
A Diablo animated series with Netflix is in development. No date, no plot.
Blizzard said similar screen deals for other IPs are being discussed.
Official hub: diablo5.blizzard.com — teaser + mailing list, not a full site yet.
Bottom line: D5 is “Diablo already won, caravan survival, procedural world, D2 loot, huge class roster, 2029.”
D4 is seasons-only from here, with one more paid class next year and a Switch 2 port tomorrow.
