Disney Greenlights Original Kingdom Hearts Anime Series for Disney+ and Disney Channel
Disney has officially ordered an original Kingdom Hearts anime series, marking the first animated television adaptation of the long-running Square Enix crossover franchise.
The project was announced during the company’s D23 fan event and is set to air on both Disney+ and Disney Channel.
The series, currently carrying the working title Kingdom Hearts, will feature a brand-new story designed to expand the existing universe rather than adapt any of the previous games.
Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis described it as a chance to bring the world of Kingdom Hearts to life in a completely new way while remaining “unmistakably Kingdom Hearts.”
Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and the Square Enix creative team are closely involved in the project’s development.
Nomura later confirmed that he has been working directly with the scenario team and has already created multiple new character designs specifically for the anime.
In a statement, he pointed to the single released key visual—a mysterious figure holding a Keyblade—as a deliberate hint and encouraged fans to “let your imaginations run wild.”
No release window, episode count, animation studio, or cast details have been announced yet. The series is simply listed as “coming soon.”
The announcement arrived alongside major Kingdom Hearts IV news at D23, including a late 2027 release window and the reveal of a Coco-inspired world, further expanding the franchise’s presence across games and now television.
