Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the Switch 2 exclusive landing tomorrow, September 17.
Review embargo lifted this morning. Consensus: series high point, enormous, a little exhausting.
Scores landing today
- IGN 10/10
- Eurogamer 5/5
- VGC 5/5
- TMI 9/10
- GameSpot 9/10
- Game Informer 8.75
- Metacritic around 89, OpenCritic around 90 — tied with Three Houses as the second-best reviewed mainline FE after Awakening (92)
What it actually is
18th mainline Fire Emblem. Intelligent Systems + Nintendo. Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara (Three Houses).
Same world as Fódlan, set in the Dagdan Empire and its capital Dagsion. Framed around the Heroic Games — win and you get one wish.
Then it opens into war and a finale against the demon god Balor, with Sothis (adult design this time) in the mix.
Four selectable heroes, plus your avatar:
- Cai — reckless kid trying to save his imprisoned father
- Dietrich — swordsman hunting a stronger foe / a monster that brought him to Dagda
- Theodora — queen pushing her homeland’s dream
- Leda — musician/dancer out for revenge
Routes interweave. You can jump between the four stories in one save. Complete a path, carry units forward. Full clear is commonly 70–100+ hours. The Verge called it their favorite Switch 2 game so far.
Combat and systems
- Grid Matches — Engage-clean tactics plus Blaze Arts (hero signature moves that cost HP; fill a Blaze Gauge for a buff, overfill and you Burst — max HP halved)
- Dungeon Clashes — party RPG battles in the Echoes: Shadows of Valentia lane; this is the system reviewers like least
- Hub life in Dagsion: train, recruit, supports, farming, world-map expeditions
- Mouse Mode on Switch 2; no in-battle touch
Critics keep repeating the same recipe: Three Houses story ambition + Engage combat snap + Echoes dungeon layer + a bigger map than the series has ever had.
Three Houses connection
Not a numbered sequel, but it is the same cosmology.
Crests and Hero’s Relics show up. Seteth’s EN/JP VAs are back (Mark Whitten / Takehito Koyasu).
Today’s X lore dump: the manga prologue has Seteth saying Dagsion reminds him of Garreg Mach, “where he used to live” — which reads sequel, not prequel.
Calendar talk puts Dagda around 1449–1454, hundreds of years after Three Houses, though the two calendars may not match 1:1.
Adult Sothis is the other tell. Nintendo is not spelling out a canon Three Houses ending.
Price / editions
Digital $69.99, physical $79.99. Dagdan Collection $119.99 (SteelBook, art cards, Dagda map, 200-page art book).
The knocks
Supports still feel like homework. Clash battles are dull for a lot of people. Late-game pacing sags.
Some repetition across the four overlapping tales. Graphics are fine, not a Switch 2 flex.
You need a lot of hours.
