Games For Love Brings Play Therapy and Long-Term Support to Hospitalized Children
BELLEVUE, Wash. — Games For Love, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2018, continues to expand its model of using gaming as a form of distraction therapy for children in hospitals while pairing it with education and career support that extends beyond treatment.
The organization was started by Nathan Blair after his son faced repeated hospitalizations for a rare genetic illness.
Blair worked with children’s hospitals and identified a gap: medical care addressed physical needs, but few systematic efforts used play to reduce isolation, anxiety, and perceived pain during long stays.
That experience led to Games For Love’s stated mission of “easing suffering, saving lives, and creating sustainable futures for children.”
Hospital Gaming Program
The group’s flagship effort, known as GFLX or the Games For Love Experience, places gaming stations, consoles, adaptive controllers, and Wi-Fi into partner facilities.
It reports relationships with more than 200 hospitals across all 50 U.S. states and 11 countries.
Partnerships are structured as multi-year arrangements that include equipment warranties and ongoing staff support rather than one-time donations.
Hospitals are not charged for the equipment or service.
Child Life and therapeutic recreation teams at facilities including
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have described the stations as helping patients manage anxiety and pain while giving them something to look forward to during treatment.
Games For Love cites clinical literature on distraction therapy and states that its programs have delivered tens of millions of hours of play activity.
Beyond the Hospital
The organization pairs hospital work with longer-term supports it calls its Program Ecosystem.
These include free STEAM and coding education, scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and career incubation programs intended to continue after a child leaves the hospital.
An international component, 1Up LifeBridge, funds medical treatments and related care for children in developing countries; the group reports more than 5,000 lives impacted through that channel.
On its website, Games For Love lists cumulative figures of more than 13 million children reached through hospital programs, over 30 million hours of play therapy, and an average impact ratio of roughly one child helped per dollar donated.
It states that 86 percent of funds go directly to programs.
Ratings and Operations
Games For Love holds a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, with the organization reporting a 99 percent score and a top ranking in the children-and-gaming category among evaluated nonprofits.
It also lists Platinum status on GuideStar/Candid.
The group is registered under EIN 83-2034928 and operates from the Bellevue, Washington, area.
