God of War: Laufey Ushers in a New Era for the Franchise
By: Father Of Darkness 7
Santa Monica Studio officially revealed God of War: Laufey during PlayStation’s June State of Play, marking one of the biggest surprises of Summer Game Fest 2026.
For the first time in the franchise’s history, Kratos steps aside as the primary protagonist, with players taking control of his wife, Faye (Laufey the Just), the legendary warrior whose legacy shaped the events of God of War (2018) and Ragnarök.

The story begins after Faye’s death, as she awakens within a mysterious realm known as the “Everywhen”—a dangerous afterlife where gods from multiple mythologies collide.
The gameplay reveal showcased a much faster combat system than previous entries, featuring magical sword techniques, soul-based abilities, and puzzle-solving mechanics aided by new companions, including a talking cube named Phranque and a sentient ribbon companion named Rue.

One of the most discussed aspects of the reveal has been the franchise’s shift toward a new perspective.
Developers have hinted that Faye’s journey may explore the consequences of Kratos’ actions throughout the series and could even revisit gods previously slain by the Ghost of Sparta.
Despite concerns from some fans, franchise director Cory Barlog reassured players that Kratos remains a core part of God of War’s future and will return in future stories. (GamesRadar+)
The reveal trailer generated massive engagement across gaming communities, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about announcements of Summer Game Fest 2026.
Social media discussions ranged from excitement over the expanded lore to debates surrounding the new protagonist and gameplay direction.
The game currently has no release date but is expected to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5. (The Verge)
