Grok in Microsoft Copilot
On Saturday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted: “More model choice coming to Copilot. Welcome Grok!” Musk replied: “Grok available in Microsoft Copilot.”
What that actually means:
- Grok models are now a selectable option inside Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This is the main workplace Copilot, not GitHub Copilot (which already added Grok 4.6 in August).
- Rollout is through Microsoft’s Frontier program first, not general availability.
- Admins must turn it on. It is disabled by default.
- xAI is listed as a Microsoft subprocessor. Prompts stay in the tenant; Microsoft says they are not used to train xAI models.
- EU, EFTA, and UK customers are excluded from the preview for regulatory/data-protection reasons.
This is the latest step in a year-long Microsoft–xAI buildout: Copilot Studio (Feb), Office add-ins for PowerPoint/Word/Excel/Outlook (June–July), GitHub Copilot (August), and now the core Copilot assistant. Microsoft is treating Copilot as a multi-model product (OpenAI, Anthropic, now Grok) rather than an OpenAI-only surface.
So: Copilot + Grok is shipping now in a limited Microsoft preview.
