March of Giants is Ubisoft’s attempt at a MOBA that is not League or Dota with a new coat of paint.
It is free-to-play, PC only on Steam, 4v4, and still in development. Early access is planned for summer 2027.
What you actually play
You are a Giant, a war commander born from the dreams and nightmares of soldiers on a World War I-style front.
The look is gunpowder fantasy and steampunk: trenches, ruined cities, bunkers, not a bright fantasy lane.
Each Giant has its own abilities and playstyle.
You also command battalions — infantry, cavalry, and tanks — and send them to scout, gather materials, capture objectives, charge other Giants, or hit fortifications.
The third pillar is Battleworks: trenches, bunkers, and reinforcements you place on the map.
They change the lane as the match goes on. When one is destroyed, you cannot rebuild on that spot, so the map itself is a resource.
The win condition is pushing the line and breaking enemy fortifications, not just last-hitting and taking a throne.
Ubisoft’s framing is that this should feel like a battlefield that scales up late in the match, not an arena skirmish.
Product marketing lead Laure Guilbert has been explicit that they are not trying to sit next to League of Legends or Dota 2.
A lot of the team came out of Rainbow Six Siege, and they are using that as the pitch: Siege was told the shooter genre was closed, and it still found a lane.
How it got here
The studio was built for this game.
A closed alpha ran in September 2025. After that they expanded what soldiers can do, added counterplay around Battleworks, made the space between lanes matter more, and widened itemization so Giants can be built differently.
The project then moved under Ubisoft. In a recent session, the dev team beat a group of top MOBA players in every match; those players stayed until about 1 a.m.
One Giant already spotlighted is Victoria, built around Angelflame. A new Giant, Pandemos, is timed to the playtest.
