NBA 2K27 right now — news and what’s actually hyping people.
Where it sits
Out Sept 4 on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. Deluxe/Ultra got in Aug 26–28. Covers: Wembanyama (Standard), Caitlin Clark (Deluxe — first WNBA premium cover), Derrick Rose (Ultra).
Critics:
OpenCritic ~76,
Metacritic around 79.
IGN 6/10,
TMI 6/10
GameSpot 7,
Game Informer 7.75. On-court praise is real.
Modes and VC are the usual fight.
What’s hyping people
Gameplay is the story. Multiple outlets calling defense the best in years.
Contests actually change make %. Dynamic Layup Engine, 7,000+ new ProPLAY animations, customizable dribble suite.
Yesterday’s patch (Sept 17) leaned into that: stronger contests, standing dunks buffed, steal rating fixed, game speed standardized across modes.
That’s the clip fodder.
MyCAREER Eras is the other hook.
Five locked time periods:
- Magic vs Bird (1984)
- Jordan (1991)
- Kobe (2003)
- LeBron (2010)
- Steph (2016)
Rules, rosters, HUDs, broadcast look all era-locked. Modern path is Fire & Concrete — 11 chapters, double last year’s story, Vince Staples as cousin Cam, Rucker Park, G League, first-ever co-op MyCAREER via Running Mate Trace Miller.
The City went co-ed and smaller/tighter. Rec environments rotate.
That’s getting more love than the park grind used to.
Top ratings at launch:
SGA, Wemby, Jokić all 97. Luka, Brunson, Giannis, Ant 95.
What’s killing the vibe
Same 2K tax. Menu opens on a MyTEAM pack ad. Getting a MyPLAYER to a usable 84 without grinding is still a cash sink (reports around $50 in VC just to get there).
City was slapping quit penalties on games that never started.
Patch 1.5 cleaned MyCAREER co-op blockers and Crew HQ phantom losses. User scores still lag critics — that streak since 2016 hasn’t broken.
Hype vs reality
Hype: “best on-court 2K in five years,” Eras, co-op career, Wemby + Clark covers. Reality: if you live in MyTEAM/The City, it’s another year of the store.
If you live on the stick, this is one of the years people say don’t skip.
