Netflix and SEGA confirmed a live-action STRANGER THAN HEAVEN movie on September 14, 2026.
It’s part of a broader multi-title partnership that also includes a Crazy Taxi comedy film and a new Sonic animated series.
The film is described as a gritty crime/action drama. SEGA’s Toru Nakahara (Senior Executive Officer and Head Producer) is attached to produce. He called it a “badass action drama.”
No director, writer, cast, or release date has been announced yet.
Details are being kept tight.
The source material
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is RGG Studio’s upcoming action-adventure (the Like a Dragon / Yakuza team).
It launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam + Game Pass day one).
It’s a distant prequel to the Like a Dragon series.
The story follows Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American orphan who stows away from San Francisco to Japan.
Over 50 years and five cities/eras (1915 Kokura, 1929 Kure, 1943 Osaka, 1951 Atami, 1965 Tokyo), he goes from penniless outsider to feared yakuza and entertainment tycoon.
It also covers the origins of the Tojo Clan.
The game’s cast is stacked: Yu Shirota as Daito, Snoop Dogg as Orpheus, a Tupac Shakur likeness as Amaru (archival footage, estate-approved, no generative AI), Dean Fujioka, Tori Kelly, Ado, and others.
Whether the movie covers the full 50-year span or focuses on one era isn’t known yet. Stay tuned — that’s all that’s been confirmed so far.
