Nintendo’s Switch 2 price hike is official.
The company announced it on May 8, 2026, as part of its latest financial results and a dedicated notice on price revisions.
Confirmed Price Changes
United States: Nintendo Switch 2 rises from $449.99 to $499.99 (+$50 / ~11%).
Canada: From $629.99 to $679.99 (+$50).
Europe (My Nintendo Store pricing): From €469.99 to €499.99 (+€30).
Japan (Japanese-language Switch 2): From ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 (+¥10,000 / ~20%) — this takes effect much sooner, on May 25, 2026.
The increases for the US, Canada, and Europe go into effect on September 1, 2026.
Nintendo also raised prices on the original Switch lineup (including Switch Lite and OLED) only in Japan, and Nintendo Switch Online subscription prices there will go up starting July 1, 2026.
Why Now?
Nintendo cited “various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.”
This is widely understood to mean rising component costs, especially memory chips (DRAM), driven by the global AI boom and ongoing supply shortages.
The same pressures have already led Sony and Microsoft to raise PlayStation and Xbox prices multiple times in recent months.
In its earnings update, Nintendo also trimmed its full-year console sales forecast by about 3 million units, signaling the company expects the higher prices (and broader market challenges) to slow demand somewhat.
Nintendo’s Official Response
The company issued a direct apology:
“We understand that pricing changes can be challenging for customers and deeply appreciate the continued enthusiasm of our fans for Nintendo products and experiences.”
President Shuntaro Furukawa emphasized that Nintendo will continue delivering a strong software lineup to maintain value for players.
What This Means for Buyers
If you’re still shopping: You have until August 31, 2026 in the US, Canada, and Europe to grab a Switch 2 at the current lower price.
Some current bundles and promotions (like certain Mario Kart World bundles) are already ending soon, so the window is tighter than it looks.
Japan buyers: The clock is running much faster — the hike hits in just over two weeks.
Fan reaction has been a mix of disappointment and memes, but many are advising “buy now if you’ve been waiting.”
Some analysts note that even at the new price, the Switch 2 remains competitively positioned against other current-gen consoles that have seen larger increases.
This is the first price adjustment for the Switch 2 since its launch in June 2025 — less than a year ago. It reflects the tough realities of the current supply-chain and AI-driven electronics market that the entire industry is navigating right now.
