HBO has not released an official Season 3 synopsis.
What is known is the structure, plus where the game and the new casting point.
Season 2 ended on Abby’s side of the same three days in Seattle, after she killed Joel and then found Ellie at the theater.
Neil Druckmann said Season 3 would star Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.
The season is built on the second half of The Last of Us Part II: the same Seattle days, told from Abby’s point of view, then the fallout.
What that covers, if it tracks the game
Abby is a Washington Liberation Front soldier in Seattle. She already got revenge for her father, Jerry, the Firefly surgeon Joel killed.
Season 3 is about what that revenge costs her. Patrick Wilson plays Jerry, so expect flashbacks to the hospital and to Abby’s life before Seattle.
Day to day, Abby moves through a war between the WLF (Isaac Dixon, played by Jeffrey Wright) and the Seraphites, a cult that rejects technology and follows a martyred prophet.
The show is expanding that side: Peter Sarsgaard plays Amon, a Seraphite leader who is not in the game, Laura Bailey plays Elizabeth, another Seraphite leader, and Li Jun Li plays Miriam, mother of Yara and Lev.
Lev and Yara are the two Seraphite kids Abby ends up protecting, which turns her against her own faction.
The back half is the confrontation with Ellie, then the Santa Barbara ending: both of them captured, Abby broken down, and Ellie choosing whether to finish it.
Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, and Gabriel Luna are still in the cast, so Ellie’s side is not gone.
It is just no longer the lead perspective. Mel, Owen, and Nora are also returning even though Season 2 killed them, which points to Abby’s flashbacks.
Show-only pieces
John Goodman and Ian Alexander play Joey and Paco, original characters who call themselves the “Heroes of the Highway.”
Their role in the plot has not been explained. Manny has been recast with Jorge Lendeborg Jr.
Craig Mazin is the only showrunner. Druckmann and Naughty Dog are not creatively involved.
HBO’s Casey Bloys has said he believes Mazin has planned this as the final season, due in 2027, so the show may compress the rest of Part II into this one run instead of a fourth season.
