A new study of nearly 579,000 Steam reviews ranked the games players actually described as frightening. These are the top 10 by how often fear-related words showed up, with the percentages included.
The Mortuary Assistant (2022, DarkStone Digital) — 49.2%
You work the night shift at a funeral home. Embalm bodies, fill out paperwork, and try to finish before something demonic notices you. The scares come from routine tasks turning wrong and entities that react to what you do. Highest fear-term rate in the study.
Visage (2020, SadSquare Studio) — 48.3%
First-person psychological horror set entirely inside one suburban house. Almost no combat. Rooms shift, past residents leave traces, and your sanity frays. The house itself feels occupied. Ranked second for pure unease.
Layers of Fear (2016, Bloober Team) — 42.8%
You play a painter whose mansion rearranges as his mind breaks. Doors lead to the wrong places, paintings change, and later chapters pull in his family. Walking-sim style with sharp psychological scares and almost no combat.
Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion (2015, Akuma Kira) — 41.8%
A short, free-to-start title built around hundreds of rooms and sudden scares. Starts light and gets meaner. High volume of jump scares and escalating dread put it high on the fear list.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010, Frictional Games) — 37.1%
The classic first-person survival horror. You wake in a castle with no memory and no weapons. Manage sanity, hide from monsters, and piece together what happened. Still the benchmark for helplessness.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 (2015, Scott Cawthon) — 37.0%
The scariest entry for many in the series. You are a child in a bedroom. Listen at doors, watch the bed, and survive the night against animatronics. Tight tension and sound design drive the fear score
Demonologist (2023, Clock Wizard Games) — 35.9%
Co-op ghost hunting. Up to four players gather evidence in haunted locations using equipment, then survive hunts. Often compared to Phasmophobia but ranked higher here for pure tension.
ROUTINE (2026, Lunar Software) — 33.5%
First-person sci-fi horror set on a lunar base. Long-delayed release. Isolation, malfunctioning systems, and something else on the station. The fear score reflects the atmosphere more than jump scares.
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (2013, The Chinese Room) — 32.1%
Sequel to The Dark Descent. Heavier on story and industrial horror, lighter on pure hide-and-seek. You explore a machine-filled facility while something hunts you. Still ranked in the top 10 for dread.
Darkwood (2017, Acid Wizard Studio) — 31.4%
Top-down survival horror in a bleak forest. Limited vision, permanent consequences, and a day/night cycle that forces you to barricade. Tension comes from not knowing what is just outside the light.
These ten are the ones players most often called frightening in their own words. Not the highest-rated. Not the biggest. The ones that made people type fear. Pick one, turn the lights off, and see if you finish it.
