Microsoft is testing ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming for Xbox Insiders.
Official Announcement (July 23, 2026)
Microsoft launched a limited-time “Test & Learn” program allowing Xbox Insiders to stream select games they already own (or free-to-play titles) via the cloud for free, in exchange for watching ads.
Key details:
- Who can access it: Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account. Anyone can join the Insider program via the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC.
- How it works: Ads play before a session starts (reports indicate roughly a 2-minute block of ads). Gameplay itself is uninterrupted.
- Session limit: 1 hour per session. Players can start another session afterward by watching more ads.
- Games available: Select titles from the player’s owned library (examples cited include Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light) plus free-to-play games such as Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact, and War Thunder. Not the full cloud catalog.
- Devices/regions: Available across supported devices and regions during the test.
- Optional: Completely voluntary — players can still use Game Pass or other methods without ads.
Microsoft’s Five Principles for Ads
Microsoft outlined clear guardrails for any ad-supported services on Xbox:
- We start with the player. Ads should create value.
- We do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.
- We hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.
- We’re clear about what’s advertising.
- We make sure ads fit what players expect on each platform.
The company framed the test as a way to lower the cost of access, expand reach (especially for players who can’t easily buy new hardware), and help Xbox One owners stream newer Series X|S games without upgrading.
Context & Reactions
This follows earlier reports and internal testing that Microsoft was exploring an ad-supported cloud tier.
It arrives amid recent Game Pass price increases and broader industry discussions about affordability and physical media.
Early coverage notes mixed reactions: some welcome cheaper access, while others worry it could open the door to more ads in the future.
Microsoft has emphasized this is only a test and that they will iterate based on player feedback.
The official post is available on the Xbox Wire site, and Insiders can share feedback through the usual channels (Player Voice and the Xbox Insiders subreddit).
